Your Questions, Answered

What Midwest Farmers Want to Know Before Planting Season

We hear these questions every spring at our shop in Wakarusa. Here’s what you need to know — and how DEUTZ-FAHR delivers.

“What size tractor do I need for row crop planting?”

For most Midwest corn and soybean operations on 200–1,000+ acres, you’ll want 125–230 HP for pulling 12- to 24-row planters. The DEUTZ-FAHR 6 Series (125–230 HP) and 7 Series (230–250 HP) are popular choices — powerful enough for heavy-draft planters, fuel-efficient enough for long spring days. Smaller operations under 200 acres can run a 5 Series (105–125 HP) and handle a 6- or 8-row planter with ease. Give us a call and we’ll walk through what fits your acres.

“Should I get a CVT or powershift transmission?”

DEUTZ-FAHR’s TTV continuously variable transmission is ideal for planting — it gives you infinite speed control from 0 to field speed without clutching. That means precise seed spacing and no jolts that jar your planter. The Powershift models (15×15 or 30×30) are a great value option that still give you smooth, reliable shifting. Both keep you moving when soil conditions change mid-row.

“How reliable are DEUTZ-FAHR tractors compared to the big brands?”

DEUTZ-FAHR has been building engines and tractors since 1864 — they literally invented the internal combustion engine. Their FARMotion engines are known for simplicity and longevity, and many models require no DPF — just DEF. That means fewer regens in the field during crunch time. And at Wakarusa Ag, our service team has over 100 years of combined experience keeping your equipment running.

“What financing is available for spring purchases?”

Through March 31, 2026, DEUTZ-FAHR is offering special financing across their lineup. The 4 Series and specialty tractors qualify for rates as low as 2.99% for up to 60 months. The 7, 8, and 9 Series have limited-time run-out pricing before the all-new 8 Series arrives in 2027. Wakarusa Ag works with multiple financing partners to find the best option for your operation.

“When should I be prepping my equipment?”

In Indiana and Ohio, planting windows typically open mid-April to early May. In Michigan, you may be looking at late April through mid-May depending on soil temps. That means right now — late February and March — is the time to schedule service, order parts, and get your tractor checked. Don’t wait until the field dries out to discover a hydraulic issue.

“Is DEUTZ-FAHR compatible with my existing implements?”

Yes. DEUTZ-FAHR tractors feature standard 3-point hitch (Cat II and III), 540/540E/1000 PTO speeds, and closed-center hydraulic systems with multiple SCVs. They’re ISOBUS-compatible for precision planting monitors, auto-guidance systems, and variable-rate technology. If you’re running a John Deere planter or a Kinze, Case, or Great Plains drill — it hooks right up. We also carry Lemken tillage and seeding equipment that pairs perfectly.

Get Your Tractor Field-Ready in 5 Steps

Don’t let a breakdown cost you a planting day. Here’s what experienced Midwest farmers are doing right now — and how Wakarusa Ag can help.

Schedule a Service Inspection
Have our service team check hydraulics, transmission fluid, filters, and belts. If you’re running a TTV, get the CVT fluid checked — it’s critical for smooth planting.
Check Planter Integration
Verify ISOBUS connections, seed monitors, and hydraulic remotes. Make sure SCV couplers and your PTO shaft are in good shape before field conditions are right.
Inspect Tires & Ballast
Midwest spring soil can be soft. Ensure correct tire pressure and ballast settings to minimize compaction while maintaining traction in your corn and bean fields.
Update Guidance & Precision Ag
Update firmware on auto-steer, GPS receivers, and rate controllers. DEUTZ-FAHR’s ISOBUS compatibility means most major precision systems plug right in.
Order Parts Early
Filters, fluids, hoses, and wear parts get backordered fast. Order now through Wakarusa Ag — we stock OEM parts for every DEUTZ-FAHR model we carry.

Frequently Asked Questions

More Questions We Hear from Midwest Farmers

Can I get a DEUTZ-FAHR tractor with a front-end loader for spring chores?

Absolutely. Most DEUTZ-FAHR models from the 4 Series through the 6 Series can be equipped with a Stoll front-end loader — factory-matched and ready to go. The 4080E and 5080D Keyline are especially popular as loader tractors for feed, mulch, and material handling. We keep popular loader configurations in stock.

Do DEUTZ-FAHR tractors require a DPF (diesel particulate filter)?

Many DEUTZ-FAHR models — particularly in the 4 and 5 Series — use a simpler emissions system with DEF only, no DPF. That means no forced regens during planting. The larger 6 and 9 Series comply with Tier 4 Final using a combination of SCR and DOC technology proven reliable across thousands of hours.

Can I test drive a DEUTZ-FAHR before buying?

Yes — we offer in-field demonstrations right here at Wakarusa Ag. Call us at 574-862-1163 or fill out our contact form to schedule a demo during your pre-season window so you can feel the difference before planting starts.

How does DEUTZ-FAHR pricing compare to John Deere or Case IH?

DEUTZ-FAHR is often positioned as a premium-quality, value-priced alternative to the major brands. Farmers frequently report getting comparable features and build quality at a lower overall cost of ownership. The current 2.99% financing and run-out pricing on select models make spring 2026 an especially competitive time to buy.

Does Wakarusa Ag offer equipment rentals?

Yes! We offer farm and construction equipment rentals at competitive rates. Rentals are a great way to try a DEUTZ-FAHR tractor on your operation before committing, or to get extra capacity during peak planting season.

What other equipment does Wakarusa Ag carry that pairs well with DEUTZ-FAHR for planting?

In addition to DEUTZ-FAHR tractors, we carry Lemken tillage and seeding equipment, Pöttinger hay and forage tools, and Honey Bee flex draper heads. We also carry Wacker Neuson skid loaders for construction and material handling. Our team can help you put together a complete spring package.
